CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER (CSF) WARNING |

Please do not become rsponsible for spreading Clasical Swine Fever virus by bringing live pigs, pork or pork products
from the infected area of the Eastern Cape Province. There the dreaded disease has already led to more than 50,000 pigs
having to be destroyed.

Classical Swine fever is an extremely dangerous viral disease of pigs that has the potential to kill many pigs and
therefore has serious financial and economical impacts.
|
|
No live pigs, pork or pork products may therefore be transported from the infected areas of the Eastern Cape Province
to the rest of the country.
|
|
A permit is needed for the movement of all live pigs and pig caracasses across any provincial border.
|
|
Do not feed any left-over food from hospitals, hostels, harbours and airports to any pigs as it may contain the
Classical Swine Fever virus.
|
|
Symptoms of Classical Swine Fever include: Pigs may show signs of bleeding on the skin and eyes, hindquarter weakness,
muscle twitching, other nervous signs (uncoordinated movement, convulsions) and blue discoloration of the ears, snout
and tail. Other non specific signs include fever, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Contact your local State Veterinarian in the event of abnormal deaths or when the disease is suspected.
